Description

Hand hygiene plays a vital role in the prevention of transmission of micro-organisms. Ozone (O3) is a highly reactive gas with a broad spectrum of antimicrobial effects on bacteria, viruses, and protozoa.

Micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, bacterial and fungal spores in water can be effectively inactivated by ozone for disinfection purposes. Our hands are contaminated with bacteria and are responsible for the spread of diseases. The purpose of this equipment is to ozonize running water to wash and disinfect hands.

Ozone is one of the most powerful disinfectants even more effective than chlorine. It allows effective disinfection without the need to use chemicals.

Ozonated tap water is an effective decontaminant of E. coli, and it could be an alternative to traditional alcohol-fluid hand disinfectants both in healthcare institutions and public places. Ozonated water may be especially valuable for individuals with skin problems.

Ozone water has received several certifications from government bodies. In 2001, the US FDA approved ozonated water as an antimicrobial agent for direct contact with foods of all types (Federal Register 66(123):33829-33830, June 26, 2001). In 1999, the US FDA transferred its responsibilities for “disinfectants” to the US EPA, and the EPA refers to ozone as a “disinfectant” for direct contact with food and for disinfecting commercial food processing equipment. However, so far, and despite the proven effectiveness of using only ozonated water for hand disinfection, there is still no published legislation regulating this application. Thus, a combination of ozonated water with antimicrobial soap or sanitizing gel significantly increases the reduction of contagious elements on the hands, increasing the effectiveness of disinfection.
